Join us for a fun and interactive hands-on Onigiri Making Workshop led by Chef Uruma from I Love Sushi Bellevue!

Onigiri, which means “to mold with the hands,” is Japan’s original finger food—simple, delicious, and steeped in history. Dating back over 2,000 years, onigiri remains one of the most beloved and iconic staples of Japanese cuisine.

Born in Niigata, Japan, in 1978, Chef Uruma grew up surrounded by the culinary business since childhood. He has worked at a hotel and Japanese kaiseki cuisine restaurant since he was 19 years old. At the age of 34, he moved to San Francisco and worked at a sushi restaurant for two years. In Japan, he learned some more professional skills at an eel specialty restaurant and a tempura specialty restaurant. In 2020, he was invited to be a chef in Denver, Colorado and has been working in a sushi restaurant in the state of Washington since 2022. He has been a Japanese cuisine chef in Japan for 20 years and in the US for 8 years.

In this workshop, Chef Uruma will guide you step by step through the process of crafting your own onigiri. You’ll learn how to portion the rice, place your fillings just right (including vegan options), and shape each onigiri so it holds together beautifully—and tastes as good as it looks. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with a timeless Japanese snack.

Spaces are limited to 30 participants, so don’t miss your chance to shape and savor your very own handmade onigiri! This workshop will be repeated on Oct. 10 (Sat). Check the Saturday schedule for time and location.

Manga Drawing Workshop

Arisa Nakamura is a graphic & manga artist. Originally from Shizuoka, Japan, she moved to the U.S. in 2013 to study Community Design. Since 2019, her comic series “Shin Issei Journey” has been featured in the North American Post, the oldest Japanese language newspaper published in the Pacific Northwest. She also designs educational materials including maps and exhibition panels. In 2021, she collaborated with the National Park Service to create the Bainbridge Island Junior Ranger Booklet, teaching the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II.

Hiroko Nagatomo

This presentation will be repeated on Saturday (Oct. 10). Check the Saturday Schedule for time and location.

Please wear dark-colored clothing, as sumi ink may stain and cannot be washed out.

Explore the elegance and simplicity of sumi-e, the traditional Japanese art of ink painting that emphasizes balance, expression, and the beauty of each brushstroke. In this beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of sumi-e, including basic brush techniques, ink preparation, brush control, and the use of line, shading, and empty space to create expressive works of art.

The workshop is led by Hiroko Nagatomo, a Japanese artist based in Seattle and a graduate of Musashino Art University. Nagatomo practices both sumi-e and bokushō (abstract expression using sumi ink), exploring the expressive power of ink, brushwork, and lines. Drawing on her artistic experience, she introduces traditional sumi-e techniques while encouraging participants to develop their own creativity and personal expression.

No prior experience is necessary. Whether you are new to Japanese art or looking to deepen your appreciation of it, this workshop offers a relaxing and inspiring introduction to a timeless artistic tradition.
