The 2017-2018 TSO Council

 The 2017-18 TSO Council

Edie HepplerPresident –- Edie Heppler.  My history is as a small business owner, with a specialty in accounting and administration.  My passion has become the TELOS program.  After 5 years of attendance and involvement I continue to want to encourage others to participate and get involved in the community created at TELOS.  The challenge remains growth and continuing to maintain that community flavor.  I encourage all TELOSians to get involved in the many clubs and events that are provided  as well as volunteering to help on our committees and the council.  I never thought that I would find a source of such good friendship and joy.

Vice PresidentJerry Bunce.   I am retired from Boeing. I wrote software that helped Jerry Buncebuild airplanes and spent many years in management. I have a Masters in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University, Go Zags! I taught Leadership classes at Bellevue College for nine years. I have been on many Boards over the years including my homeowners board, Special Olympics and the Northwest Center for Emerging Technologies.  I am now enjoying taking TELOS classes and will facilitate a Views of the News class. I love the community of learning and the wide variety of classes offered. TELOS is such a great program and resource. I want to help keep it strong and growing for our current TELOSians and all those Boomers coming.

Alexa Munoz     SecretaryAlexa Munoz. The Secretary records and communicates information on decisions that coordinate policies and activities within the TELOS Student Organization (TSO).   Information coordination gives the TSO Council the opportunity to reach its goals collaboratively and cooperatively with TELOS participants and college administration.   While working in educational institutions earning funds for my college education, the secretarial skills I developed as a teen-ager now allow me to continue my commitment to public service in promotion of life-long learning.  I currently am Secretary of the Curriculum Committee, and recently served as Secretary for 3 years in a non-profit organization.

Public service has been an important aspect of my life.   I have served in various Board of Director roles in non-profit organizations, and was appointed to several decision-making positions in city and county government.  I authored a book, and for many years performed as a cellist in orchestras and small ensembles.

My experience also includes the business world where I partnered to co-own a business, and was the proprietress of two other businesses. I earned a BA in Political Science, and an AAS in Environmental Horticulture and Floral Design.

Treasurer –  Arlene LaTurner. The TSO council provides an opportunity to Arlene LaTurner get to know great people while helping TELOS become an even better community. My experience working as a bookkeeper for a number of years gave me the skills with numbers needed for the position of the TSO Treasurer, where I hope to serve for a third year.

 Members at Large –

Carla Barnes   Carla Barnes.  I have a BA in Psychology and in Anthropology from the University of Washington. And I have done further graduate study in Forest Soils, also at UW. I enjoyed a 30-year career with the City of Seattle in construction management and forest road Engineering.

In the past I have been a volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America and served in executive positions in political organizations. At this time I am caring for an elderly relative and am an active grandmother of two grandchildren. I enjoy hiking, fishing and anything in the great outdoors.

I consider myself a lifelong learner and read about economics, current events, history and science and many current periodicals. I have been a longtime participant in the TELOS current events discussion classes and have enjoyed these classes immensely. Recently I have guided Views of the News and Great Decisions courses.

Diane Kester. I have a BA in English and Secondary Teaching Certificate Diane Kesterfrom the University of Colorado.  I have had several careers:  Pan American stewardess, high school English teacher, and owner of the Goldworks jewelry store in Gilman Village. I was thrilled to discover the TELOS program and take several classes each session as well as serving on the curriculum committee; I am interested in continuating on the council for a second year as I want to give back to a program that I so respect and enjoy.

Chuck Kimbrough  Chuck Kimbrough. I am a semi-retired 46 yr. trial lawyer, retired Colonel, with interests in current affairs, politics and history. I have greatly enjoyed TELOS classes and events.  I put my skills to use since spring of 2014, along with a small team, in negotiating a number of items, including tuition reductions with BC. I also would like to help keep this great academic community program vibrant and grow it substantially.  I have previously served as Vice President of the council.

Ronald Lebeiko.  I joined TELOS after relocating from the Midwest 3 years ago, and Ron Lebeikolive in Issaquah with my wife, grandchildren and children nearby.  Participating in TELOS classes has been stimulating, and I’m impressed with the enthusiasm and knowledge of fellow retirees.  My background is as administrative staff in a variety of healthcare settings, and I have an MA in public administration.  I hope to contribute to the curriculum of TELOS while I enjoy associating with the bright and interesting people I meet in TELOS activities.

Brian Leyton   Bryan Leyton .   I am a retired radiologist.  TELOS has been great for me, and I would like to contribute something back to TELOS.

Sandi Medendorp
.   I am a retired construction insurance professional of 35 years who Sandi Medendorpstarted out as high school English teacher.  Along the way I taught college level insurance classes and earned an MBA.  I am very grateful to be considered as a contributor to the success of TELOS.  I would love to bring my “can do” enthusiasm and administrative/managerial experience to a super council team.

Kathy Shoemaker  Sadly, Kathy passed away in November.  She is greatly missed.  Kathy Shoemaker.  When I retired from teaching and moved to this area six years ago, I knew no one and lacked a clear vision of what I wanted to do with my time. TELOS has played a big role in helping me find both friends and meaning in my new surroundings, and I have appreciated the chance to give back by being an active member of the TELOS Student Organization the last four years.  I currently serve on two committees, and look forward to serving on next year’s TSO Council.

TSO Student Organization’s Activities and Plans

In the meeting, Jerry led the discussion about the TSO Student Organization’s activities and future plans. TELOS had 20 classes in the winter quarter, with 5 being canceled, and 325 registrations. However, there was a question about the organization’s impact and whether it should continue. The group also discussed the upcoming spring quarter, with 16 classes planned for spring quarter. Fewer classes and registrations expected in summer. The possibility of adding another session of the generative AI for daily life class was also discussed. But George Liu now has a full time job and is not teaching at this time.

As always thanks go to Donna for collecting and sharing the TELOS class and registration information.

Esteban’s Role and Program Updates

Jerry, Ted, and Phil discussed their meeting with Esteban Maldonado, the new Director of Continuing Education and IBIT. Esteban was described as honest, earnest, and interested in their work. Phil suggested asking Esteban for an update on the college’s pulse regarding their program in their next meeting. Ted emphasized the need for Esteban to focus on their mission and not just be a nice face. Jerry noted that Esteban took over Liz Hollerman’s responsibilities, including the IBIT program, and expressed satisfaction with Esteban’s support for their program. The team agreed to send a note to Esteban, asking about the decrease in course numbers and what they can expect in the future.

Advertising and Instructor Recruitment Discussion

The team discussed the use of funds for advertising and instructor recruitment. They considered donating remaining funds in the TSO Student account with Student Programs to the foundation for more advertising and instructor recruitment. The team also discussed the process of hiring instructors as contractors, which simplifies the hiring process. The treasurer’s report showed that no money had been spent since the last meeting, leaving around $5,000 in the TSO student account. The team also discussed the potential for cross-advertising between Edmonds Creative Research Institute and Bellevue College.

Council Considers Disbanding and Storage

The council discusses the possibility of disbanding and agrees to make a decision at their next meeting on May 28th. They consider holding a final general meeting if they decide to disband. Jerry mentions the need for someone to update the website with meeting minutes, suggesting they might recruit a student for this task. The group also discusses the storage booth they have on campus, questioning its usefulness and contents. No new business is brought up, and the meeting is adjourned.
