Gooseberries

by Elizabeth Carroll Hayden

Gooseberries hang
heavy with summer’s juice,
thin branches bend
beneath the weight.
Black seeds enveloped
in bulbous bellies,
veined skin stretched,
waiting
to burst forth dripping.

Small green worms
lurk in pine trees, larvae
clinging to needles,
bellies unfilled. They free
their grasp, tumble
and perch on branches,
waiting
to devour the drooping flesh.
