{"id":3582,"date":"2016-02-12T15:31:36","date_gmt":"2016-02-12T23:31:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/telos-tso\/?page_id=3582"},"modified":"2016-08-24T16:35:46","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T23:35:46","slug":"history-of-telos","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/telos-tso\/history-of-telos\/","title":{"rendered":"History of TELOS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;color: #000080\"><em><strong>TELOS&#8217;s History &#8212; 2016 Marks 40th Year Anniversary<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below are two articles&#8211; one written as TELOS\u00a0was about to start and the other, a retrospective, was written by Gloria Campbell, a TELOS instructor, author, and editor.\u00a0 The first (pictured above and printed below), <em>Senior citizens design and teach own classes<\/em>, was published in the September 9<span style=\"font-size: 10px;line-height: 10px\">,\u00a0<\/span>1976 edition of the <em>Journal American<\/em>. The latter is excerpted from an article to be published in the <em>2016 Better Living Health and Fitness Guide<\/em> magazine insert of the<em> Bellevue Reporter<\/em>\u2019s February 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0edition. <span style=\"font-size: 12px\">(Interestingly, just as TELOS has grown and evolved, so has the &#8220;Journal American&#8221;, the name chosen in 1976 when the &#8220;Bellevue American&#8221;, which was first published in 1930, merged with the &#8220;Eastside Journal&#8221;. \u00a0The publication changed its flag again in 2005 when it became the\u00a0&#8220;Bellevue Reporter&#8221;.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>(1) Senior citizens design and teach own classes<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Senior citizens will be teaching classes at Bellevue Community College as well as taking them. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>\u201cThis is a real change in the approach to senior citizen education programs\u201d said Joy Carey, coordinator for the new program called TELOS.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>\u201cTELOS is a Greek word meaning ultimate aim or goal.\u00a0 We put the letters all in cap<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-670\" src=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/telos-tso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2014\/10\/Screenshot-12-e1456003001638.png\" alt=\"Screenshot (12)\" width=\"81\" height=\"63\" \/>itals because we hope we can also make them stand for something that relates to seniors and the program.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the things we will do at the first session.\u201d \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>The program grew out of a series of planning sessions that began in January.\u00a0 College staff members meeting with senior citizens learned that the seniors not only wanted to attend classes, but they wanted to design, implement and teach them as well. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>There were no funds for such a program, so the planning group applied for a grant.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t approved, but that didn\u2019t stop the planners.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>\u201cWe decided to try and make it self-supporting,\u201d Carey said.\u00a0 \u201cWe did receive some money to get started with from the Student Activities Fund at the college.\u201d <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Courses will be taught Tuesdays, from October 5\u00a0through November 23, at the Northwest Community Center, 9825 NE 24<sup>th<\/sup> St. Bellevue.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>\u201cWe chose that location because it is close to Chinook Junior High School where lunches are served to any East Side senior citizen on Tuesdays.\u201d Carey said.\u00a0 \u201cThe class atmosphere will be relaxed and there won\u2019t be any tests or exams.\u00a0 This is purely for education and enjoyment.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>The TELOS schedule includes a class called \u201cMeeting the Problems of Growing Old\u201d taught by Helen Ansley, coordinator for the Senior Actualization and Growth Exploration program (SAGE).\u00a0 Margaret Pratt will teach a class on dealing with grief and loneliness.\u00a0 Pratt is director of Synthesis, a counseling service for persons learning to cope with grief. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Rabbi Raphael and Reeva Levine are also members of the TELOS faculty. Rabbi Levine will lead a class called \u201cThe Religions by Which People Live.\u201d Reeva will teach beginner and intermediate painting in oils, pastels and watercolors.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Betty Howe, former associate editor of the East Side Journal, will teach a course in creative and journalistic writing.\u00a0 \u201cHistory You\u2019ve Lived Through\u201d will be taught by Delta Williams, history instructor at Bellevue Community College. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Virginia Wilson, anthropologist and former college-level instructor, will lead a class in exploration of aging around the world: a look at the roles of elderly persons in other cultures and other times. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Elizabeth Johnson, television producer, and Dan LaFond, coordinator of the Bellevue Community College gerontology program, will help their students investigate the rights of elderly persons. Gael Foote and Kay Anderson, members of the BCC Parent Education staff, will teach assertiveness training and yoga. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>The <span style=\"color: #000000\">$25 registration fee admits a person to the TELOS program and entitles him to enroll in up to three courses.\u00a0<\/span> Scholarship funds are available.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px\"><strong><em>(2) TELOS: Bellevue\u2019s Home for Life-Long Learning, Lifetime Friends<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . \u00a0\u00a0<em>TELOS began in 1976 when Helen Ansley, then aged 76, agreed to implement a joint program of Bellevue Community College and Bellevue Parks and Recreation. Ansley was active in SAGE, the Senior Actualization and Growth Exploration group in Berkeley. At age 90, she published Life&#8217;s Finishing School, What Now?\u00a0 Joy Carey, a student intern at the University of Washington, became the first director.\u00a0 That year thirty nine students participated in ten offerings.\u00a0Courses included \u201cHow to Spot a Flimflam Man,\u201d \u201cAging for All Ages,\u201d and a Displaced Homemaker\u2019s program. Judy Gellatly became the director in 1982, followed by Gordon Hartwick in 1984. During the 1990s, TELOS classes were held at the Northwest Community Center in Bellevue and included a study tour in southern England.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Retired educators and professionals taught classes in diverse fields in the early years and continue to do so today.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-963\" src=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/telos-tso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2014\/11\/Screenshot-46-e1430347063753.png\" alt=\"Screenshot (46)\" width=\"115\" height=\"88\" \/>Over the years, the program expanded in range and student enrollment. In <span style=\"color: #000000\">2001, <\/span>classes moved to Bellevue College\u2019s Continuing Education campus (BCCE) on <span style=\"color: #000000\">Northup Way [and in 2011 moved to the new BCCE building on NE 29th Pl.] .<\/span> Bill Stephens, a member of the TELOS faculty, became the director and continued in that role until 2013. The current director is Angela Young.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>Computer classes and workshops were added in 2004. This spring, courses include \u201cLearn how to use&#8211;and master&#8211;your devices!&#8221; and &#8220;History of Rock and Roll.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Other courses focus on current events, health, history, languages, the arts, science, literature and writing, and religion. An advisory group reviews proposed courses to assemble a lively collection of stimulating experiences for students. TELOS currently offers more than forty classes, with over 500 students enrolling. Tuition is generally $79 per course.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3701\" src=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/telos-tso\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2016\/02\/Coffee-and-Wisdom.jpg\" alt=\"Coffee and Wisdom\" width=\"160\" height=\"122\" \/>Outside of class, TELOS students can make new friends and become part of an active community sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/telos-tso\/home-page-1\/founding-of-tso\/\">TELOS Student Organization<\/a>\u00a0(TSO). Monthly Friday morning \u201cCoffee and Wisdom\u201d talks are a popular addition to the calendar. TSO also sponsors book, movie, and economics\u00a0clubs, seminars between quarters, and a summer picnic and holiday party to help people get to know each other better.
