{"id":843,"date":"2012-03-21T12:19:35","date_gmt":"2012-03-21T12:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/?p=843"},"modified":"2015-03-26T07:12:45","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T07:12:45","slug":"city-of-angels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/city-of-angels\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Angels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by <a title=\"City of Angels\" href=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=377&amp;action=edit\">Alyssa Anne Westgate<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I sometimes miss Los Angeles<\/p>\n<p>the iridescent glow of limelight creates a warmth<br \/>\na different temperature than the omnipresent sunshine.<br \/>\nEffervescent particles of light seem to shoot from different dimensions,<br \/>\nstinging like bits of asphalt bouncing of the sides of cars into skin,<br \/>\ntaking root in the epidermis and mutating into thickened armor-<br \/>\nshells as strong as roaches with their lacquered wings.<\/p>\n<p>Ephemeral dust melts over the landscape, like glaze on burnt orange clay.<br \/>\nThey used to tell me that glass is made from the stuff of sand<br \/>\n-the same that dirtied our toes with tar-<br \/>\nwe would search for proof and find it in worn down beer bottles,<br \/>\nthe remnants of time\u2019s broken narration, a man-made alabaster.<\/p>\n<p>The only place I know where I am in the world is by the pier-<br \/>\nI almost drowned in the salty water near its barnacled sea legs,<br \/>\nthe ocean holding me easily under til she filled my throat.<br \/>\nI looked through the water, beyond the surface I was below, to the sky-<\/p>\n<p>-perhaps this was my fate-<\/p>\n<p>they used to tell me of the girl who was stolen by the sea.<br \/>\n(I thought I saw her) floating out there on a cloud of foam,<br \/>\na daughter taken by force, springing forth nacreous mermaid scales,<br \/>\nher hair floating around her head like dead algae.<\/p>\n<p>and yet on land the flame of the refineries burn like beacons to the lost souls,<br \/>\nto feed the constant thrust of engines, the ebb and flow of ancient ointment\u00a0and air, renewed daily by God\u2019s gracious breath and shuddering heartbeat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Alyssa Anne Westgate I sometimes miss Los Angeles the iridescent glow of limelight creates a warmth a different temperature than the omnipresent sunshine.
