{"id":193,"date":"2011-03-06T01:43:54","date_gmt":"2011-03-06T01:43:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/?p=193"},"modified":"2015-03-26T10:03:55","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T10:03:55","slug":"of-a-daughter-by-elizabeth-carroll-hayden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/of-a-daughter-by-elizabeth-carroll-hayden\/","title":{"rendered":"Of a Daughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by <a href=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/about\/author-biographies\/\">Elizabeth Carroll Hayden<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Frail binding cracks, leaving glue\u2019s<br \/>\ndust on my fingers, the book<br \/>\nfalls open, to the underscore<br \/>\non Ulysses,<\/p>\n<p>but, I paint Penelope,<br \/>\nnot scarred by the scrags of war<br \/>\nbut long years of separation<br \/>\nfrom Ulysses.<\/p>\n<p>How does my great-grandfather<br \/>\nfare drawn in by the Gods of War<br \/>\nand the journey of Agamemnon<br \/>\nand Ulysses?<\/p>\n<p>With brush I paint fair Penelope,<br \/>\ncloth draped over hands,<br \/>\nlinen streaming, dripping over<br \/>\nlike blood,<\/p>\n<p>she holds her hands out as<br \/>\nshe awaits the return<br \/>\nof her warrior husband,<br \/>\nUlysses.<\/p>\n<p>Does my great-grandfather dream<br \/>\nof the ancient glory of Troy<br \/>\nas Ulysses and Agamemnon<br \/>\nbattle aside Achilles?<\/p>\n<p>The Gods of War dragged them from<br \/>\ntheir beds. My great-grandfather<br \/>\nread of Ulysses in an old<br \/>\nvolume of Tennyson<\/p>\n<p>now lying on my mother\u2019s shelf.<br \/>\nI paint the wives, Penelope<br \/>\nand Clytemnestra, waiting<br \/>\nfor the Gods of War<\/p>\n<p>to return their husbands, one<br \/>\nto the bed of Penelope,<br \/>\none to the waiting knife<br \/>\nof Clytemnestra,<\/p>\n<p>avenging the sacrifice to the Gods of War<br \/>\nand the deaths of daughters.
