Manley<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I walked out into the parking lot at midnight<br \/>\nand scared a jackrabbit twice as big as you.<br \/>\nIt sat absolutely still for a moment,<br \/>\nits long stiff ears straight up,<br \/>\nwatching me with its sad, dark eyes<br \/>\nbefore it loped away slowly between cars.<\/p>\n<p>No one else around. Everything quiet and still<br \/>\nexcept a whisper of cars on the freeway<br \/>\nand one or two stars twinkling high above the city.<\/p>\n<p>I went back into the hospital, up to the room<br \/>\nwhere your mother was asleep, resting<br \/>\nfrom the effort of bringing you into the world.<\/p>\n<p>In trees just outside the window were dozens<br \/>\nof tiny birds sleeping among the leaves<br \/>\nlike soft gray fruits. The breeze was strong enough<br \/>\nthat trees swayed and branches shivered<br \/>\nand birds shifted positions in their sleep.<br \/>\nSomehow they kept their balance,<br \/>\ntheir eyes closed, and some with their heads<br \/>\ntucked under their wings, waiting<br \/>\nthose few short hours for daylight<br \/>\nand their chance to sing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by C.R.
