{"id":1638,"date":"2013-03-03T01:00:40","date_gmt":"2013-03-03T01:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/?p=1638"},"modified":"2015-03-26T07:02:30","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T07:02:30","slug":"on-a-bus-after-albee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/on-a-bus-after-albee\/","title":{"rendered":"On a Bus after Albee&#8217;s Zoo Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By <a href=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/belletrist\/about\/author-biographies\/\">Mike Beasley<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Up stepped she and paid her fee,<br \/>\nThrusting with studied gravity<br \/>\nEach carping coin into the fare box mouth.<br \/>\nIgnoring other vacant seats,<br \/>\nShe chose the one in front of mine,<br \/>\nThe back of which I had just claimed<br \/>\nAs pillow for my nodding head<br \/>\nWeighed down by what the dramatist had said.<\/p>\n<p>I raised my eyes in time to see<br \/>\nHer human rights bloom flagrantly<br \/>\nUpon her furrowed brow; in time to catch<br \/>\nThe cocksure glory of her brimstone stare.<\/p>\n<p>She did not speak, but mildewed perfume,<br \/>\nPowdered skin, befouled circumstance\u2014<br \/>\nAnd impudence dispatching from her glance\u2014<br \/>\nSlipped by the sentry of my deference,<\/p>\n<p>Through crusts of cultivation, down where<br \/>\nBrooding smiths beat ploughshares into swords.<br \/>\nWith my arms unsheathed, I inched an elbow towards<br \/>\nThe backbone nexus of her spiny cross,<br \/>\nPrepared to make a spectacle of loss,<\/p>\n<p>Until I caught some lupine, canine thing,<br \/>\nAlert and snarling, getting set to spring<br \/>\nAnd nip upon the tendons of a sheep<br \/>\nSo rudely woken from vexatious sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Undone, I settled back, a muttering wreck,<br \/>\nMouthing \u201cExcuse Me\u201d to her upbraiding neck.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mike Beasley\u00a0 Up stepped she and paid her fee, Thrusting with studied gravity Each carping coin into the fare box mouth.
