All night with sandpaper hands, he<br \/>\nhas been pressing against her, twisting her body<br \/>\nin the sheets.<\/p>\n<p>Outside she thinks she hears a baby crying,<br \/>\nand milk begins to cascade from her nipples<br \/>\nto her stretch-marked navel. He is snoring.<br \/>\nHis nose hair<\/p>\n<p>pokes out beyond his nostril. Wincing from pain,<br \/>\nshe stumbles to the bathroom to express her milk<br \/>\ninto the toilet. Behind the thin wall a bed creaks.<br \/>\n<i>J&#8217;ai perdu ma vie.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Outside their 1976 Peugeot waits,<br \/>\na relic of her past life, to take them home.<br \/>\nShe steps outside and leans against its teal hood.<br \/>\nHe still sleeps<\/p>\n<p>unmoving on the bed, his once lean body a<br \/>\nsoft mass of hair and skin. Their babysitter waits,<br \/>\nbut she can&#8217;t bring herself to wake him yet.<br \/>\nThe smooth metal<\/p>\n<p>of the car is cold on her cheek. The lifeless body<br \/>\nof the car asks nothing from her.
