A rapid pulse that<br \/>\nslowly becomes less foreign to<br \/>\nmy reflexes. The drumming<br \/>\nbecomes more constant, as if<br \/>\nthe Cherokees themselves<br \/>\nwere in chant across my body.<br \/>\nThe beats transition<br \/>\nto the shake of a turtleshell rattle;<br \/>\nin my mind I see dances<br \/>\nand waves of arms.<br \/>\nEach drop that kisses my face<br \/>\nleaves a sweet,<br \/>\nxylophonic sound.<br \/>\nThe maroon velvet drapes open<br \/>\nto the bows of the musicians and performers-<br \/>\nthe audience cheers.<br \/>\nThe finale is bittersweet;<br \/>\nto embrace it for what it is,<br \/>\nlying in the rain or<br \/>\nwatching<br \/>\na cultural ensemble develop on my palms.<br \/>\nYet to move forward- hidden<br \/>\nbehind umbrellas and window panes.<br \/>\nIf I fear of loneliness,<br \/>\nwhy do I deny such an accompaniment?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ashley Claytor I am lying still while the water sings on my skin.
