MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) Challenge!

Please join the Arab Culture Student Association and the BC Association of Veterans for an MRE Taste Challenge on Wednesday, May 19 from 3:30 – 4:30 PM on Zoom.  Five students will taste Halal MRE and five will taste regular military MRE.  Six of these students are veterans who know their MREs!

The first MREs were used in the field in 1983. Plain and unpopular, soldiers did not like to eat them. Also, military members who adhered to Jewish or Islamic dietary requirements often had to carry their own rations.   It took almost two decades for the production of appetizing MREs. MRE developers increased portion sizes as well as introduced diversity in the rations. There are now many varieties of food for both regular and Halal MREs. Come and see what kind of food these students will taste!

Blood and Oil Documentary with Q&A and Discussion

How did the Western world become so engaged in the Middle East? Why did the Ottoman Empire – now known as the Middle East – become involved with World War I, a European affair? The documentary film “Blood and Oil – The Middle East in World War I” follows conflict from the Ottoman Empire’s entry into the Great War in October 1914, to the Allied victory and declaration of the new Turkish Republic in 1923, and the hostilities that have plagued the region since. This film is sponsored by the Arab Culture Student Association in collaboration as part of Earth Week.

Enjoy the film any time (run time 1 hour 52 minutes), about conflicts for middle eastern oil. Then join a short discussion with the Arabic Culture Student Association at 3:30 pm.
